How are you called to make a difference in the world?
At Spirit of Peace, you can find many meaningful ways to grow personally, serve others and further peace and justice in our community and beyond. We believe that God is still speaking, and are thus active and committed, not to dogma, but to a loving God, our neighbors and the Earth we share. No conditions.
Our ministry groups cover a breadth of topics and purpose, but social justice, spirituality, belonging and education infuse all gatherings.
COMMUNITY BUILDING
30s, 40s, 50s & FABULOUS
Meets monthly at 5 p.m.
It can be difficult for working adults to take time to slow down. This group makes time to check in with each other, laugh, and offer support through life’s joys and challenges. Whether we gather in each other’s homes or get together for a night of bowling, the purpose is to take a break and reconnect.
MEDIA OUTREACH MINISTRY TEAM
Meets monthly
This ministry team uses a virtual presence to connect church and community members with opportunities to learn more about social justice and faith. Through social media, technology, and digital marketing this team provides resources for education and inspiration.
MEET & EAT
Meets the 2nd Friday of the month at 6 p.m.
The dinner table is one of the best areas to gather. This group, welcome to all ages, meets monthly to connect, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company. We meet at the church and at local parks when the weather permits. The main point is to be together.
MEN’S GROUP
Spirit of Peace members and friends gather a few times a year to swap stories, share culinary and brewing talents, and support one another. Tall tales and laughter are also sure to be expected.
TRUE LIFE TALES
Meets the 3rd Sunday of the month at 6 p.m.
Everyone’s life is a compilation of stories. Whether you are the storyteller or listener, this group’s purpose is to know one another better and experience a deeper connection.
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT MINISTRY TEAM
Kids and teens will find fun, friendship, and the chance to explore faith in a way that inspires compassion for others, themselves, and the world.
ENVIRONMENT
COMMUNITY GARDEN
Each year, from spring through fall, you will find people from the surrounding neighborhood growing magnificent gardens at Spirit of Peace! We offer 30 organic garden plots to those who wish to have more green space.
CREATION JUSTICE COMMITTEE
Spirit of Peace is proud to be a Creation Justice Church, an official designation that celebrates our congregation’s commitment to being green.
Through the leadership of our Creation Justice Committee, we strive to integrate sustainability into our church building and activities, foster leadership in the wider community on issues of environmental justice, and celebrate God’s creation in worship and beyond.
PROJECT FOOD FOREST
When Spirit of Peace was built, members began to restore the land around the church for the benefit of the environment and to give back for what had been taken from the land to construct the building. As part of this effort, we planted a Food Forest, with the help of Project Food Forest, that members and neighbors tend throughout the growing season.
SUSTAINABILITY SEWING
Meets on a per project basis.
Formerly known as “Crafting and Quilting,” this group has evolved over time and now focuses on creating fabric items that are environmentally friendly. New ideas and all skill levels are welcome!
LEARNING
ADULT FORUM
Meets Sundays at 9 a.m.
This is a place to dive deep into various topics related to progressive theology and social justice. If you enjoy learning and thrive in being with like-minded individuals who are also pondering life’s big questions, join us on Sunday morning in the Fireside Room!
BOOK CLUB
Meets the first Monday of the month at 2 p.m.
Spirit of Peace is a congregation of life-long learners. The monthly book studies are times to have a shared learning experience and immerse ourselves in new and challenging ideas. Titles have included A Life on Our Planet by David Attenborough, The Seed Keeper by Dianne Wilson, and Still Life by Louise Penny. What we’re reading
RETIRED GUYS BOOK CLUB
Meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 2 p.m.
The title only somewhat describes this group. These men come together to share ideas, learn from one another, and discuss historical and current events—and, of course, the books. What the Guys are reading
PEACE & JUSTICE
“JUST” FLICKS
Meets the 3rd Friday of the month at 7 p.m.
If you love to watch movies and want to engage in thoughtful conversation, this group is for you. Each month we feature a documentary or thought-provoking fictional story. Following the movie, we discuss ideas about creating justice and non-violence in our lives and the world. What we’re screening
SOCIAL ACTION MINISTRY TEAM
Social justice is a core value of Spirit of Peace.
The social action ministry team lives out our prophetic calling to be a social justice church by promoting ministries of activism, education, and community involvement. Each year we participate in the Sioux Falls Pride parade and festival and support the organization’s mission. Our congregation partners with another church to serve at The Banquet, a community food ministry. And we constantly inform our congregation about educational and advocacy opportunities surrounding social justice topics.
SPIRITUALITY
BIBLE STUDY
Meets Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
Have you wanted to read the New Testament through a theologically progressive lens? This group is using Marcus Borg’s Evolution of the Word: The New Testament in the Order the Books Were Written. The discussions take place within the context of the 1st century, Roman-controlled world. Thoughtful conversations from a variety of backgrounds enrich these gatherings.
CHOIR
Meets Wednesdays at 6 p.m.
Singers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join—we have a lot of fun! We sing for worship on the first three Sundays of every month. The music we share covers a broad range in music history—from the old hymns of the church to new, more contemporary choral music.
PRAYER TEAM
At times we need the reassurance that a close circle of people are surrounding us, caring for us. This is a confidential group that supports Spirit of Peace members and friends through prayer.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Sundays at 9 a.m.
Preschool and elementary school children learn about the teachings of Jesus and connect to the Spirit of God within all. Activities using art, music, play, prayer, meditation, and relaxation are designed to help children develop caring and compassion for themselves and others.
WORSHIP TEAM
The Worship Ministry Team works with the pastor to help people experience a deeper relationship with God through a rich worship life. We encourage creativity in worship, collaborate on visual elements in the worship space, including symbolic or artistic representations on the communion table, and assist with special worship services.
YOUTH GROUP
Middle school and high school youth meet weekly to focus on God’s love for them and others through social justice activities within the church and broader community, as well as through scripture, prayer, discussion, and other fun activities and events.
STEWARDSHIP
BUILDING & GROUNDS MINISTRY TEAM
The buildings and grounds ministry team acts as good stewards of our facility by caring for our building, property, equipment; and assists related service providers.
FINANCE MINISTRY TEAM
The finance ministry team monitors the financial health of the church and assists the senior pastor with the annual stewardship campaign and budgeting process.
